Fremantle is a gorgeous beach. I absolutely loved travelling the west coast. One of the best experiences of my life. The fremantle hotel is a great place to make friends with the locals

Ann - February 2003
We made the 40km move to Fremantle (only 20k south of Perth) to have a look around and stayed 3 nights. “Freo” looks wonderful, having had millions spent upgrading its buildings and facilities during the America’s Cup times. Lots of Victorian buildings mixed in with the modern. Friday and Saturday nights are busy – the whole town seems to spend time eating outdoors. We explored the small weekend market and spent time in the Maritime and Shipwreck Museums looking at the history of shipwrecks, gazing at Australia II and its ‘winged keel’ and generally being educated about early maritime exploration of Australia’s coast. It put paid to our early education in which we learnt that Captain Cook and the British ‘discovered’ Oz – not so, the Dutch & Portugese were here hundreds of years earlier, made maps and generally did everything except establish an outpost.

We also joined a tour onto the “Ovens”, one of Australia’s submarines circa 1970’s. What a dirty, smelly, narrow, dangerous boat it was – why anyone would volunteer (and they were ALL volunteers) to become a submariner, I don’t know – there are more ugly ways to die on a submarine than you can think of, and if you’re not dying, then you’re asleep on a tiny cot above or below someone else, eating while sitting on your bed or anywhere else that you can find, showering rarely because of a lack of water (or not at all in the case of the French) or facing unutterable boredom the rest of the time!

A relaxed cafe laiden town with a good bit of history with the prison. It has character and a great Market and a nice relaxed holiday atmosphere very easy to get to from perth on train.

Loved Fremantle. Wonderful old port district of Perth. Great eating areas, maritime museums, sandstone buildings, not to far from CBD of Perth and just a wonderful port city.
